Worst to Best: My Chemical Romance
I've covered MCR in my mall emo blog, so I want to dig deeper about them. They are one of the greatest rock bands of the 2000s, and they're one of my favorite bands of all time. They've made 4 studio albums and a compilation album throughout their entire career. Today I'm going to rank them from worst to best.
And they came back in 2019, thanks to covid, they didn't release anything and still can't go on tour. A bit sad :(
5. Conventional Weapons (2013)
This is definitely their weakest point. The whole thing is a compilation recorded in 2009, and they're not satisfied with it, so they just released it slightly. It's basically a Danger Days B Side, and Danger Days aren't that good either. A lot of the songs felt unfinished and poorly mixed compared to their other work. With that being said, this album isn't that horrible either. Some of the lyrics really shined out for me. Ambulance is a pretty decent song, I love the tune and melody. Gun has a catchy guitar riff. The World is Ugly is the heartbreaker, although they came back in 2019. Anyway, it's entirely nothing, but it is their weakest.
Score: 5.5/10
4. Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys (2010)
Fans have polarizing feelings about this record. If you are an old-school fan, you will probably dislike it, because it sounds less rocky and more poppy. Gerard Way even said, he didn't expect this album to be a thing. I'm kind of in-between. The album itself isn't quite as creative or groundbreaking as their other stuff, but it's just a really fun and nostalgia album to listen to. The concept is quite interesting, and that's where the"Killjoys" come. There is some much fun in tracks like Na Na Na and Summertime, sometimes the nostalgia kicks in, it's unstoppable. Everyone loves DESTROYA, it's such a fun track to enjoy. Some of the tracks are a little mediocre, but it's still just fun.
Score: 6.8/10
3. I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love (2002)
MCR's debut is such an underrated album from them. And it's shameful that this album can only be No.3 because their other albums are so amazing. Anyway, I will describe this album as their"post-hardcore" era, the guitar riffs are heavier, vocals are crazier. People criticize Bullets for being poorly mixed, I say it's an enjoyable and unique style. It takes time to get this type of rawness and edginess, and hot take: this is their most emotional album. This album has so many tracks that I can't get over with. The starter Romance is quite spooky and nice, Vampires Will Never Hurt You has that dramatic energy, and Drowning Lessons is my possible favorite, the melody is catchy, and the energy is unmatched. Bullets is a criminally underrated album that you should listen to, but it still isn't as good as the following two.
Score: 8.8/10
2. Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge (2004)
Positively the defining sound for mall emo. This album is so good that some people even consider it to be MCR's best work. Despite those cringy song names, Three Cheers don't have a single low. Three Cheers kept the emotional rawness and developed on the production, so it's more accessible and relatable. Helena and The Ghost of You are two of my favorites of MCR. The concept that it built just felt like a very, very sweet haunting ghost which were incredibly sad. Thank You For The Venom goes hard AF, the guitar riffs are instantly catchy. I'm not Okay is every emo kids' anthem, which is a bit overrated, I'm fine with it though. Overall, this record is amazing. If you haven't, please check this out.
Score: 9.3/10
1. The Black Parade (2006)
The Black Parade is easily one of the best rock albums of the 2000s, if you don't think that's true, you're a bitch. -- The Melon Man
Easily MCR's best work, and one of my favorite albums of all time. MCR showcased all their ambition and creativity on this album. After Bullets and Three Cheers, The Black Parade overthrew everyone's expectation for an emo band. The mixed sound with emo, punk rock, glam rock, and even a little metal was absolutely stunning and amazing. They wrote a beautiful and flawless concept that could probably goes down in the music history, in my opinion. The whole thing is spectacular, great sounding, dark and meaningful concept, and a cultural-defining aesthetic for the whole emo and scene generation. I don't even want to talk about the highlights, because simply there're too many. Just imagine Welcome to the Black Parade was playing in a live show, and everyone screaming We'll Carry On out loud. That's what rock power feels like, warming and united. How can you dislike MCR and The Black Parade?
Score: 10/10
